Who’s your favorite character?

the.lynda asked:

No limits… well, other than they have to be from a book.

Which character had a real impact on you?
Why that particular character, out of all those little people roaming around on the pages of all those books in the library or bookstore?

I have no doubt that someone is going to say Edward Cullen. Probably more than one someone. But, if you must. If that is your absolutely most beloved character. Then go right ahead.

My choice would have to be Sydney Carton, from A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.
I’m not one who swoons over the classics. No where close, in fact. I love science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, and all things new and creative. The classics make my skin crawl.
But Sydney Carton.. wow. Talk about your multi-dimensional charater. While he was being brave and noble for the first time, I was blubbering like a baby.

BaitersinSpace asked:

I would very much like to see a SEQUEL to the film in the present day of the classic science fiction film WHEN THE EARTH STOOD STILL or failing that a remake of the original in the present day that when Klaatu gets shot, he dies and doesn’t get around to saying “Gort! Deglet ovrosco” - with the modern special effect these days, I think it would be very interesting to see what they could do with either story line, especially a sequel - say Gort came back for some reason - what do you think people - has anyone got any influence out there with Jerry Bruckheimer, Joel Schumacher people like that etc., or maybe it would suit better a director like David Twohy i.e. the excellent film The Arrival and Pitch Black one of the most innovative science fiction film makers I’ve ever seen or perhaps the crème de la crème of scienced fiction himself Mr. James Cameron - well he is in my humble opinion anyway - what do you think people - a good idea? If you don’t think it’s a good idea, please say so!
If you do think it’s a good idea - is there anyone out there with influence with one if not all these big directors or another famous director - preferably not Speilberg as I think lately he’s lost the plot - I mean look at the complete hash of things he made with his War of the Worlds - no apart from him if any one has any influence and you like my idea - please can you say if you can and/or will influence a ‘big money director’ to resurrect Gort - AGAIN please?

We all agree ;
That there was a lineal progression in manned space flight
That those who flew the missions were superb pilots and engineers
That 7 UNMANNED vehicles had landed on the moon prior to 7/20/69
That on 12/24/68 Apollo 8 was in lunar orbit and took pictures of Earth
That on Apollo 10 Gene Cernan cursed into an open mike while spinning above the lunar surface- and NASA got letters complaining about it.
That 9 Saturn V rockets left earth and made it to the moon-hard to fake a 365′ rocket launch
That 9 Apollo Command Modules returned and show the charring commensurate with a 25000 mph re-entry.
That in all the movies and science fiction prior to July 1969 nobody had ever envisioned that something that looked like the LM would be the spacecraft that would actually land on the moon
The classic scenario was always the large rocket leaves Earth , lands on the moon ,returns to Earth as a large rocket
When does it become impossible ?

I haven’t read much in the genre, but I am a voracious reader of books in general and would like to try reading some good SF novels. I have read one Sheri S. Tepper book a long time ago, I read the Orson Scott Card “Ender’s Game” series, Madeliene L’Engel (if she counts as SF), I tried to plow through “Dune” a long time ago and never got through it but I was in labor with my son at the time–not exactly light reading! Can anyone recommend any good SF that’s not TOO technical, but not too light either? I’m going to try “Dune” again but if anyone can recommend any classics or just a really good read, I’ll try them all. Thanks for your help!

Would You Like Yahoo to Divide “Books & Authors” into Genres?

Rella asked:

What do you think? Would that be a hindrance or a help? Contribute to confusion or clarity?

What genres do you suggest they break out, if any? (Classics, Teen, Romance, Horror, Mystery, Science Fiction, Harry Potter’s own section or include with Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Children’s, etc.)
It’s hard to pick a best answer to this question, because everyone’s opinion is equally valid.

My personal preference would be to divide “Books & Authors” into several sections. Judging from the answers, some people would like that, and some wouldn’t, which is pretty normal.

Rousseau l, your answer made me laugh. You’re second-runner up just for that. A lot of people expressed their opinions very well; thank you, everybody! It was interesting to read all your opinions.

I personally wouldn’t choose to make a special Harry Potter section; I would categorize those as “Science Fiction & Fantasy.” I think the questions on HP will die down after awhile (if God has mercy!). ;-D

The winner of Best Answer is…

Leather bound series of classic books sold in the 80s and 90s. Who published them?

jackson asked:

For years there was these ads where each month you would get a classic book (you know Mark Twain, Dickens, etc.) that was leatherbound and on acid free paper. There was even a different one that was just science fiction classics. Anybody know who published them or the name of the club?
