Recommend me some books please?

classic science fiction
M asked:

I’m not really into fantasy. Like harry potter and stuff, lord of the rings was alright. I’ve never tried Science Fiction but I’d like to have something that at least sounds fairly realistic.
I don’t like things about vampires etc.

Please no ***** lit, unless it’s romance that isn’t too cheesy.

I’ve pretty much read most of the major classics so that’s out.

The princess bride! So good! Dont judge before you read it, haha.

Read anything by James Patterson. The Alex Cross books by him are really good, and not ***** lit at all.

Neal Shusterman also has a few good ones.

Do you consider Pratchett a major classic? (I do) if not, try him. Comedy/satire - Fantasy (and in his earlier ones sometimes sci-fi)

  4. tobscholarly says:

    The Kite Runner
    Snowflake & the Secret Fan
    ANything by Barbara Kingsolver

Try Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller. It’s got great language and imagery, like a classic novel, but is classified as sci-fi. Very well written and will leave you thinking for days (in my case, years!) after you’ve read it.

Also, check out some of the top 100 novels of all time lists (like Amazon and Time Magazine) Sometimes you find surprises on there .

    Happy reading!

    Crank
    Glass
    Impulse

    All are by Ellen Hopkins
They are mostly about teens fighting against drugs or mental health issues. Glass is the sequel to Crank. All are VERY good reads. I have lent these to over twenty friends and all of them returned the books telling me how much they love them!

you should try the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer.
i know its about vampires but the books are amazing and worth your time.
and they make the vampires real life and not like cartoonish vampires.

so is the Uglys series by Scott Westerfield.
its like kinda fantasyish but its based on our world in the future and is a great read.

you should at least give them a try.
    hope you like them.
    :]

i know you said no vampires but…
twilight, new moon, eclipse, breaking dawn and midnight sun are SOO good!
i am not some gothinc emo person i am actually preppy but my cousin read them and said that they were SOO good and i KNOW she is 100% preppy and girly. so i gave them a try. and omg i could not believe how good it was after u got to chapter 5. it is not really about vampires. just about a girl and a boy who are so much in love but then something happens and the boy (edward) has to save the girl (bella). that is the best i can put it without giving anything away… please give it a try. after you read it it sound like it could be so real. it is romantic in a way but it also keeps u on the edge of your seat (so to speek) and it is not cheesy! i can not discribe how much i love these books! please trust me and just try to read the first 6 or 7 chapters! trust me it gets SO much better at the end and way better in the next books (new moon made me cry and throw the book across the room bc i was so mad but it got better) please read them!

MEMORIES OF MY MELANCHOLY WHORES, by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez. A brilliant story, and not what you think.

SABBATH REST by Steve Daley. A thriller set against the last days of the Mayan Calendar. Extremely thought provoking.

I have answered this question so many times, I decided to dedicate a web site to answer this question. Here it is:

Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book along with a brief summary of adult content. There is also HP fan fiction, a “Readers’ Choice” list of favorite books, and a list of heroine sorcery fantasy books.

All of the following are excellent scifi (author, followed by books).

    Jules Verne - free online
Journey to the Center of the Earth (my favorite scifi)
    20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
    Mysterious Island

H G Wells - free online, and roughly half-length novels
    War of the Worlds
    The Time Machine (downer ending)
The Invisible Man (unlike many IM stories, he’s a villain. This is the original)

    Isaac Asimov
I, Robot (you *must* read this - the only “must read” scifi)
Elijah Baley books - excellent both as scifi *and* as murder mysteries - the best of both worlds (warning: adult content in the 3rd book)
Foundation Series - *the* classic scifi trilogy

Andre Norton - *the* classic female scifi author, most of her books involve “coming of age” and pure scifi adventure
her best: Star Man’s Son (also titled 2250 A.D.)
    other excellent:
    Judgment on Janus
    Forerunner series
    Central Control series
    Solar Queen series
The Time Traders (Atlantis, magic - very cool!)
    The Zero Stone

Another excellent: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Though written for younger readers, I read this recently and it is great! Better than the movie (which was also pretty good).

    I hope this helps.

    Harry
