How do you get a science fiction book published?

My boyfriend has already written a science fiction book and is attempting to publish it. I’ve seen some places that state a literary agent is necessary on many occasions or the publisher won’t even look at it. Is this true? If not how do you know which publisher to go to? Any recommendations or advice for a young first time science fiction writer?

How does this sound to you? Its the intro sentence but I dont know how to make it sound right
“A Clockwork Orange, the science fiction novel written by Anthony Burgess is often known to be a classic read”
or maybe i should say that its known for being innovative and bold?
Okay then. How about
“The majority of young readers today are apathetic when it comes to reading older books. The science fiction book “A Clockwork Orange” by Antony Burgess is a classic read and is well known for being innovative and bold to almost any individual”
