What type of Science fiction is hot now?

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
Joe asked:

I am a novice writer. I like to science fiction and fiction in general, but science fiction is my forte. However, I want to get published BAD, I really want to have a lit agent consider my work. What kind of science fiction or fiction in general is in demand in the literary industry that agents really want to see good works of? Anyone who can answer my question with really helpful advice on what kind of sci-fi sells would really make my day. Thanks!

I know that very technical stories like one of Jules Verne’s are science fiction, but what about stories of werewolves, etc.

Does this count as science fiction? Does it count as fantasy fiction? Is fantasy fiction a subgroup of science fiction?

10 Books To Take Around The World?

alexb1373 asked:

Hi I am going travelling for a few months soon and am trying to decide what books to take to keep me occupied through the many long bus journeys ahead. I am not a fan of science-fiction or horror. I can put up with a crime, as long as it is well written. I would like:

1. A Long Classic - one of those whoppers you never usually have time to read.
2. A Classic
3. A Memoir/Autobiography
4. Non-Fiction - something political/ philosophical/ theoretical, a “makes you think” book.
5. Light-Reading - a good old indulgent romance book.
6. A Modern Classic - a good page-turner.
7. Something Topical - I am mostly travelling in Eastern/Central Africa, so an African fiction should make the list.
8. A Play
9. Something Different - something creative and out of the ordinary.
10. The One Everyone Should Read - out of everything you’ve ever read, the one you would recommend the highest, whether it be the most affecting, emotional or simply enjoyable.

Wung J asked:

I’ve read the classics (Clarke, Asimov, etc) . And I recently finished Kim Stanley Robinson’s “Mars Trilogy” and thought it rocked. Military and Space Opera Sci-fi can be good, but I’m looking for novels with more depth. And I’ve always been fascinated by Mars.
Ray Bradbury IS my favorite writer period. And “There will come soft rains” is great. But I think of him as more of a fantasy writer. And I heard “enders game” has a really simplistic writing style. I’m big on description.

shrek asked:

Have read all of Asimov, Arthur C Clark, Jules Verne, And somebody said Anne McAffrey and I read most of hers as well ( Well I didn’t read the Doona trilogy, and the powers that be, or Peytabee in her case)

So what’s next? Plz classify them under diff. headings as in Popular/Classic, or Your favs( Not very popular, but you like them?)

Ah yes, and someone suggested Steel beach , and Titan (john Varley) So I read them as well. Now what?

I am reaching the end of my student life, so am reading these things at a fast pace( 2-3 books a week is all i can manage , what with exams coming.)
Oh, I forgotto say that I have read all of Michael Crichton except Eaters of The dead, and Vector.

Couldn’t find them!
And lots of Robincook things, bt they don’t come across as sci-fi, I said that cos someone suggested robiin cook.

I meant proper scifi, like in Asimov

What are some books that make for “light” reading?

Melissa asked:

It doesn’t have to be extremely light, I just don’t want something immensely thought-provoking. I’d like something enjoyable. Are there any Classics that are light? As I enjoy reading those the most but I’ll read anything, really. Autobiographies/Biographies are nice as well. Please, no Science Fiction.

do you think the idea of turning the old black n white science fiction and monster films is such a good idea?

swann32 asked:

i think the old black n white films should be left alone i think the idea of turning such classic films for example the earth vs the flyng saucers into colour is just a bad idea just think of how the classic 1933 picture of king kong would be like in colour. i think the colourisation in these pictures only ruins the picture and the decade they first came out in
